Van hire in Valencia: rent one yourself or book a driver?

If your move fits into 4–5 hours, a van with driver usually costs the same or less than hiring a van yourself: approximately €50/h with a 2-hour minimum (€100), with no €600–1,200 deposit, no damage excess, no refuelling and no hunting for a parking spot. Self-drive hire starts to pay off on long days of 6 hours or more, and only if you are comfortable driving a large van through central Valencia and have friends to help you load.

Below is the full comparison: what each option really costs, an hour-by-hour table with the break-even point and a quick checklist to decide in five minutes.

What self-drive van hire really costs

The price on the hire company’s website is only the first line. A large 10–12 m³ van in Valencia typically goes for around €60–120 per day at market rates, depending on the company, the season and the day of the week (Saturdays and month-ends cost more). Some companies offer half-day or 4-hour rentals, but they are rarely much cheaper. Then add:

  • Deposit (fianza). Held on a card, often a credit card rather than a debit card. For large vans, €600–1,200 is common, though it varies by company.
  • Excess (franquicia). Clip a wing mirror in a narrow street in Ciutat Vella and you pay up to the excess, which can be over €1,000. Reducing it to zero usually means a daily supplement.
  • Fuel. The van goes back with the same fuel level it left with. A loaded van drinks more than you would expect.
  • Mileage. Some rates cap daily kilometres and charge for any extra.
  • Your time. Collecting the van, checking every scratch with the staff, returning it within office hours. That is easily 1–2 hours that never appear on any quote.

All of these figures are approximate: every hire company sets its own terms, so check them before you book.

What a van with driver includes

With a van with driver in Valencia the maths is a single line: hours × rate. MoveValencia does not hire out vehicles: we match you with an authorised local carrier from our network, who arrives with their own van of up to ~20 m³, straps and blankets, and a driver who knows the city.

The break-even point: when each option wins

Take a realistic full-day rental: about €80–100 for the van, €15–30 of fuel and an insurance supplement if you would rather not gamble on the excess. That comes to €120–160, before counting your time. Now compare it with hours of a van with driver:

Hours of workWith driver (approx.)Self-drive hire (approx.)Usually better value
2 h€100€120–160With driver
3 h€150€120–160A draw; convenience wins
4 h€200€120–160Similar once you add your time and risk
5 h€250€120–160Similar, depends on you
6–8 h€300–400€120–160Self-drive, if you drive confidently

On paper, hiring wins earlier, but the table leaves out collecting and returning the van, the risk of damage and the laps around the block looking for somewhere to stop. That is why, in practice, the real break-even point is around 4–5 hours. To estimate your own hours more precisely, the guide on how much a move in Valencia costs lists typical times by flat size.

When hiring a van yourself makes sense

Self-drive hire is the sensible choice when:

  • The move is long but simple, with lots of short trips through the day and no rush.
  • You have experience with large vans and the narrow streets of Russafa or El Carmen don’t worry you.
  • You have two or three strong friends helping for free all day.
  • You need the van for several days, for example to clear out a village house bit by bit.

If all of that sounds like you, hire. If even one point doesn’t apply, the savings usually vanish.

When a van with driver works out better

  • Short jobs: a sofa, a washing machine, a studio flat. Done in 2–3 hours for approximately €100–150.
  • No credit card for the deposit, or you would rather not have €1,000 frozen.
  • City centre. Parking a loaded van is the hardest part of any move in Valencia. To occupy the road during a move, the City Council (Ayuntamiento) has an authorisation procedure on sede.valencia.es; check the requirements and lead times there well before the date.
  • Heavy furniture or no lift. You can add loaders at approximately €20/h per person, and carrying up the stairs has no per-floor surcharge.
  • Big purchases. For IKEA Alfafar delivery with assembly, hiring a van on a Saturday is usually the slowest and most expensive route.

How to decide in 5 minutes

  1. Estimate the hours. Allow 30–40 minutes of loading per furnished room, the drive (20–30 minutes within Valencia) and the same again to unload.
  2. Work out who is lifting. If you don’t have help for the whole day, add the cost of a mover, or the favour you will owe your friends.
  3. Get two prices. One from the hire company with everything included (deposit, excess, insurance, mileage) and one for the van with driver.
  4. Check against the table. Under 4 hours, the driver almost always wins; over 6, self-drive does if you meet every condition above.
  5. Book early. Saturdays and month-ends fill up first, both at hire companies and with carriers.

To run the numbers with no commitment, the prices page with calculator uses the same formula: van €50/h × hours + €20/h × movers × hours. If it is only a couple of items, have a look at mini moves.

Questions on this topic

It depends on the hours. Up to 3 hours, a van with driver (approximately €50/h, 2-hour minimum = €100) almost always wins. At 4–5 hours both options cost roughly the same. From 6 hours, self-drive hire can be cheaper on paper, as long as there is no damage, no fines and no parking trouble.
A category B licence covers vehicles up to 3,500 kg maximum authorised mass, which includes the usual removal vans. Many hire companies also ask for a minimum age and a minimum number of years holding the licence; conditions vary by company, so check them before booking.
It varies a lot by company and vehicle: from a few hundred euros up to €600–1,200 held on a credit card for a large van. On top of that there is the damage excess, which can exceed €1,000 unless you buy extra cover. A van with driver has no deposit and no excess.
Yes, the driver helps with loading and unloading. If you have heavy furniture, a large sofa or a building without a lift, it is worth adding a mover at approximately €20/h. The carrier confirms the final price before the job starts.
Often, yes, depending on which carriers in the network are free. Send us a WhatsApp or use the form on the site with what needs moving, both addresses and whether there is a lift, and we match you with an authorised local carrier who confirms the time and price.
